Republican Glenn Youngkin defeats Democrat Terry McAuliffe in a major upset by securing 2.1 percent extra votes in Tuesday’s election – NBC news reported.
Meanwhile, the New Jersey elections came as a bigger shock when Republican Jack Ciatarelli took the lead by gaining 1200 votes over Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, who had been expected to be re-elected.
“We’re sorry tonight couldn’t yet be the celebration we wanted it to be,” said Gov. Phil Murphy to his supporters.
In a winning speech, Republican Glenn Youngkin promised his supporters to work on state affairs to transform the state.
“We work in real people time, not government time,” said Youngkin.
Virginia’s current governor, Democrat Ralph Northam, could not stand in the competition as the state’s policy does not allow Governors to go for consecutive terms in office.
In another good news for Republicans, their team member, former US Marine Winsome Sears, has been elected as the state’s first-ever black lieutenant governor. The position previously had been the chair of the pro-slavery Confederacy at the time of the American Civil War.
The current results of the elections in the country are sending warning signs to Democrats, indicating the trouble which may arise ahead of the next years’ mid elections.
“This is the spirit of Virginia coming together like never before,” told Youngkin to his supporters while joking that breakfast would be served soon. “For too long, we’ve been expected to shelve our dreams, to shelve our hope, to settle for low expectations. We will not be a commonwealth of low expectations. We’ll be a commonwealth of high expectations,” he added.
Youngkin, the political newcomer, based his campaign on a promise that he will work to unite the distorted Republican party. He spread the message of building a state focused on education and the economy. He kept a safe distance from the former US president, Trump, while keeping his base engaged.
Meanwhile, McAuliffe was pressed down by the post-Trump political fatigue, which was further elevated by Biden’s drowning poll numbers and Washinton’s gridlocked agenda. However, he continued to run his political campaign, which saw damaging gaffes.
According to the critics, McAuliffe was extremely dependant on attempting to associate Youngkin with Donald Trump.
