The SAG Awards ceremony for 2022 began with actor Leslie Odom Jr. sending “our thoughts, prayers and hopes for impending peace”.
On Sunday, American actor, Will Smith bagged the best movie actor award for his ‘King Richard’ while Jessica Chastain was entitled to the best movie actress award for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.”
“The heartwarming Sundance Film Festival hit “CODA” won best acting ensemble while Will Smith and Jessica Chastain took top individual honors at Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards”, Daily Commercial Tweeted.
Smith, 53, won the top male actor award over fellow nominees, Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth), Andrew Garfield (Tick, Tick … Boom!), and Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos).
While taking the stage to grab the honorable trophy for ‘King Richard’ on Sunday night at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, Smith broke into tears calling his win ‘one of the best moments’ of his entire career. The Hollywood actor then raved about the legacy of his character for the movie, who is the father of legends Serena Williams and Venus.
“Richard Williams is a dreamer like no one you’ve ever known,” Smith said, who played the lead role in King Richard and Fresh Prince. “He has a power of belief that borders on insanity and sometimes tips over the border, which is absolutely necessary to take something from impossible to possible.”
In his memorable speech, Smith also praised the other cast members and rising stars, including Demi Singleton and Saniyya Sidney.
“You guys are actors, so you know how sometimes your onscreen characters kind of bleed into real life,” Smith tributed the cast. “To walk you around this room tonight, to parent you on this film, to deliver you into this business has been one of the greatest pleasures of my life.”
On the other hand, Hollywood actress Jessica Chastain who kind of disappeared under the look of Tammy Faye, grabbed the trophy for the best actress female award.
While Tammy’s husband was sent behind bars for double-crossing their millions of followers, she herself collides with fellow evangelists over her acceptance and support of the LGBTQ community amidst the heightened AIDS epidemic.
“It was a dream of mine to play Tammy Faye,” Chastain said. “She was a real trailblazer and she wrapped her arms around those who were repeatedly cast aside and she launched herself into decades of LGBTQ love.”
