On Sunday night, Sept. 26, the Tony Awards were organized to honor the achievements from the year 2019-2020 Broadway season. The ceremony was to be held on June 7, 2020, but due to pandemic situation, the ceremony was postponed and closed Broadway for around 1.5 years.

Let’s dig into some of the show highlights which employed a very unique format, commencing with an award ceremony that was hosted by actress and singer Audra McDonald that was also streamed on Paramount+. Moreover, the ceremony was followed by the live concert event “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!,” and this was broadcasted on CBS and streamed on Paramount+. The concert was hosted by Leslie Odom Jr.

The unforgettable ceremony ended with the final three awards as Best Revival of a Play, Best Musical and Best Play. These awards were presented during the primetime special.

The most nominations received with 15 was “Jagged Little Pill,” the musician featuring a song that is written by Alanis Morissette. This was nominated for the Best Musical Playback. Moulin Rouge! The Musical” – this also followed very close to Alani’s song having 14 nominations and took home the award of the Best Musical.

“We’re a little late, but we are here!” said by Audra McDonald at the opening of the show as she observed that half of the faces were covered with masks, an acknowledgment of the COVID-19 precautions for the event.

“It’s wonderful to see half of your beautiful faces,” she said while commencing the show. “Like every show on Broadway, our audience is vaxxed and masked. Masks have made reopening of theaters a reality, after more than 560 nights in the dark. The lights are on and we’re back.”

The attendees of the show were required to wear masks and to be vaccinated, as per New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s mandate. A proof was also required to participate in the indoor activities that include entertainment and live performances.
