World-renowned app TikTok lands itself in hot waters as a $92 million settlement lawsuit has been filed against it over the infringement of privacy. This said lawsuit makes every individual on the app eligible to receive compensation from the famous short clips app.

According to the court papers, a $92 million settlement lawsuit was filed against the famous TikTok Inc. under consumer privacy litigation.

According to the lawsuit “the company violated federal and state law by collecting and using personal data in connection with their use of the TikTok – make your day video – sharing application and its predecessor app musical.ly”

A spokesperson from TikTok company has denied the allegation while stating that it settled with its parent company ByteDance earlier this year in February over similar allegations.

As for now, regardless of the denial from the company. The settlement notice has been circulating on the app and it is directing its users towards the app.

Tiktok is one of the most popular apps among the younger generation especially generation Z. According to a recent survey, more than 48% of people between the age of 18 to 29 years use the famous TikTok app.

Just this September 2021, TikTok surpassed the milestone of having 1 billion users across the globe. The app which deals in short clips and music videos is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance. The app has been under criticism various times in the past as well because of its controversial take on different issues such as the adverse effect on teenage kids’ minds and bodies.

The federal lawsuit states that the TikTok company broke the law of biometric privacy in Illinois. This law assists the lawsuits against big conglomerate companies which encroach private data of their users without their consent through different techniques such as facial and fingerprint scanning.

Illinois is the only state which allows its residents to file lawsuits for monetary charges against such companies for extorting unauthorized personal data without consent.

According to the lawsuit, every user who logged into the app before 30th September 2021 is liable to receive an amount from the $92 million settlement case. The residents of Illinois will be receiving six times more of the money compared to other state filers.

The lawsuit states that latest by 1st March 2022 the filer can claim their monetary damage against the company. Minors can get assistance from their parents.

Tiktok will be compensating every individual on its app for infringement of personal data without consent.
