What a night it was at the Tony Awards 2022! Not in the wildest dream did the truest fans of the infamous Broadway Spring Awakening would have thought that they would see a reunion of the original cast – ever!
Well, that did happen and the wildest dreams came true when the original cast of Broadway Spring Awakening performed on one of the most loved tracks from the Broadway at the 75th annual Tony Awards 2022.
Zach Braff and Lea Michele introduced the reunion of the original cast on the stage after a whopping 15 years.
The cast took over the stage while the audience was still awestruck and began singing one of the most famous tracks from the show – Touch Me. As soon as the soft ballet came to an end, Skylar Astin started showcasing his impressive voice while teamed up with Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff to sing another famous track from the Broadway.
Spring Awakening was written by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik and was about the coming-of-age rock genre, a musical through and through.
It debuted back in June 2006 at the Great White Way stage. The cast at that time was all teenagers as the story revolves around them discovering their sexual orientations while struggling with life and their dreams.
The hit Broadway show had garnered 11 nominations at the Tony Awards back in 2007, the debut year of the show. It swept that year with eight out of eleven awards including the best director and the best musical.
The production finally saw the curtain drawn for the last time in January of 2009 but the cast remained close and they even performed at a reunion concert last year marking the 15 years of the Broadway.
“It was so emotional, and it meant so much to all of us and to the audience as well,” Groff gushed about the reunion and the special documentary about the Broadway. “And we had Radical Media come in and create this documentary … that’s about the reunion, but it’s also about the legacy of Spring Awakening and how it changed all of our lives and the way that theater can change people’s lives.”
The documentary titled Spring Awakening: Those you’ve known is available and is being streamed on HBO max platform where the cast shares their experiences and their chronicles about the original production. The cast has always been very close and this was depicted in the documentary as well where the lead actress Michele recalled an incident stating,
“At one point, I literally showed [Jonathan] my whole vagina,” Michele stated in the documentary which premiered last month. “He was like: ‘I’ve never seen a woman’s vagina before. Would you show me?’ And I was like, ‘Sure.’ And I took a desk lamp … and showed him. That’s how close we are.”
