14 people were wounded in a shooting incident that had occured at a South Carolina mall on Saturday, and ,according to authorities, one suspect in connection to the shooting has been arrested.
Jewayne M. Price, 22, was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm by Columbia police. Additional charges may be brought against the suspect, police have indicated.
Police are still looking for at least two men who were seen with firearms.
Nine people had been shot while five got injured while they were trying to flee the mall. According to the authorities, the injured ones ranged from 15 – 73 years old.
“All other victims have been treated and released or will be released shortly,” police said in a statement.
As many as ten individuals were shot at the South Carolina mall on Saturday, according to police earlier in the day. Officers arrived on the site at 2:28 p.m. and started evacuating individuals from store to store, authorities said.
“What is important is that we have no fatalities,” he told reporters.
“We don’t believe this was random,” he said. “We believe the individuals who were armed knew each other.”
Columbiana Centre stated in a tweet that the violent incident was “extremely upsetting and our thoughts are with everyone impacted.”
“We are grateful for the quick response and continued support of our security team and our partners in law enforcement,” the mall said in a statement.
Holbrook has urged people to contact the authorities if they have any information or footage related to the incident.
“We know a lot of different people saw a lot of different things. We’re asking them to take a moment, clear your thoughts and contact law enforcement,” said Police Chief William Holbrook.
