A Small Plane crashed in Haitian capital Port-au-Prince killing at least six including the pilot on Wednesday, according to authorities.

Haiti’s civil aviation authority said the jet took off at 3:44 p.m. ET from the Port-au-Prince airport on its way to the city of Jacmel, but the plane encountered an engine failure and transmitted a distress signal at 4:04 p.m.

On Twitter, Prime Minister Ariel Henry said, “I extend my sympathies to the families of the victims, who have been just plunged into the greatest desolation by this new tragedy.” He did not, however, specify the number of wounded or dead.

The mayor of the town of Carrefour, where the jet went down, Jude Edouard Pierre, confirmed the death toll as six. The pilot was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to a government official. Videos showing an aircraft wreckage in the middle of a Haitian street with what seemed to be the remains of the victims were shared widely on WhatsApp
