Nebraska- A deadly crash on Sunday evening in a crowded pedestrian area left 2 people dead and 19 others injured.
A mass casualty incident took place in the area of Lincoln where after a car, multiple vehicles followed the suit and crashed into pedestrians.
According to the Lincoln Police Department, 2 women were declared dead on the spot who are believed to be the passengers of the crashed car whereas 19 others were hospitalized.
Lincoln Police Department stated “One is in critical condition. The other 18 people are believed to be in non-life-threatening condition at this time.”
Video footage and pictures posted online showcase that a huge blazing fire engulfed the wreckage of the cars near the intersection of O Street and South 52nd Street located just outside the Barnes & Noble’s Bookstore. The videos showed nearby people fleeing, stumbling, and running from the area.
Lincoln Fire & Rescue officials declared that there was a fire at the scene which made it difficult to rescue the victims.
According to the initial reports, the incident occurred when a car overpassed a red light, striking another vehicle in front which led to both the cars hitting the crowd.
The deadly car crash took place near the Americruise event which was being hosted by the Midwest Association of Car Enthusiasts (MACE).
“Every Memorial Day Weekend, hundreds of cars, bikes, and trucks flock to Lincoln, NE to cruise down O Street to show off their rides and do some hooning!” the event’s description stated.
“We want to remind everyone that the police won’t be a stranger to this event so PLEASE cruise at your own risk and be cautious to those around you! There will be large crowds all along O street, and we don’t need anyone in a wreck or worse in the hospital!” the description continued.
Most of the victims were treated on the spot for their minor injuries while the others were transferred to the nearby hospitals. Lincoln Police, Nebraska is urging people to avoid the area to clear the debris and investigate the crash without interruption
