According to authorities, a Mississippi festival shooting incident on Saturday night resulted in the death of one person and the injury of many others.

Tyree Jones, Hinds County Sheriff, stated in a tweet that six individuals were shot at the Mudbugs Festival happening at the state fairgrounds, including a suspected gunman who died at the scene. The police suspect there were many shooters engaged in the event, according to reports.

The incident occurred just after 10 p.m., according to officials.

Jones said that the crime scene has been secured and at least two individuals have been taken into custody for questioning. All of the persons detained are juveniles.

There have been a number of gunshot victims transferred to nearby hospitals, all of whom are in stable condition.

According to the sheriff, the investigation into the event revealed that the dead man was shot and killed by a police officer.

“We believe… that the victim that is deceased was actively involved in the incident that was reported regarding the gunfire,” he said. “I will not reveal the name or the agency the officer is affiliated with. That is something that will come out… at a later date.”

A police investigation into the event is still ongoing, and Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has also been brought in to assist with the investigation.
