Doubts grow into worrisome concerns about the safety of the Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai after a new email surfaces in the news.

CGTN, the state-owned television network of China released an alleged email claiming to be of Peng Shuai as international concerns grow regarding the safety and whereabouts of the famous athlete.

Peng Shuai has not made a public appearance since she accused and blamed former prime minister Zhang Gaoli of sexual abuse on her social media on November 2, 2021.

Missing Chinese star Peng Shuai email

Peng posted that Zhang Gaoli tried to have sex with her at his own place about two years ago and shared screenshots regarding the incident. The post has been deleted now. She posted on Weibo, which is a Twitter-like platform in China. Her post was deleted within the first 30 minutes as the Chinese censors came into action to wipe out anything said against the government.

Within minutes any post which had the slightest hint of the said post was deleted and Peng Shuai’s Weibo account was blocked from the platform.

The new email published by CGTN showcases that Peng is fine after the incident and is walking away from the sexual allegations as she doesn’t have any evidence to prove it. The email was sent directly to the CEO of CGTN, Steve Simon, and the Chairman of WTA (Women’s Tennis Association).

“The statement released today by Chinese state media concerning Peng Shuai only raises my concerns as to her safety and whereabouts,” Simon released a statement. “I have a hard time believing that Peng Shuai actually wrote the email we received or believes what is being attributed to her.”

He further added: “Peng Shuai must be allowed to speak freely, without coercion or intimidation from any source. Her allegation of sexual assault must be respected, investigated with full transparency and without censorship.”

The Chairman of WTA has also showcased doubts over the authenticity of the said email.

Surprisingly, the email was sent to CGTN in the English language and it was reported for the international audience only. The local Chinese media did not report the email at all even though Peng Shuai is a very famous name in the country.
