Renowned French football player Karim Benzema was found guilty in a sex tape scandal. According to the reports, he was charged for attempting to blackmail a fellow team member which resulted in his expulsion from the national team for almost five years.

Karim Benzema who plays for Real Madrid and is considered one of its star strikers was convicted in a French court for the charges of attempting to blackmail a fellow player in a sex tape.

The 33 years old football star was given a one-year prison sentence as well as a fine of 75,000 euros which is roughly $84,000.

As per the reports, Benzema was accused of helping out 4 other men to blackmail Mathieu Valbuena with an intimate sex video that had been stolen from Valbuena’s mobile phone.

Mathieu Valbuena is also a team member of the national football team of France.

Benzema had repeatedly denied all the allegations against him and had also announced that he would be appealing against the verdict via his lawyers.

Karim chose not to attend the final hearing of the court and was not present at the time of the verdict. As per the reports, he has been busy preparing for Real Madrid’s Champions League match which is to be played on Wednesday against Sheriff Tiraspol.

Karim Benzema has been a key player for France’s national squad but he was dropped from the team in 2015 on these charges. He was not part of the winning team of the World Cup 2018.

Didier Deschamps, the coach of the French team had recalled him for the European championship this year.

The President of the French Soccer Federation, Noel Le Graet, had announced prior to the final verdict of the case that if he is proven guilty he may not be kicked out of the team immediately rather it will be up to the coach of the squad whether to keep the star striker in the team or not.

Karim Benzema has been in astonishing form since he returned to the national squad and is now one of the top five high scorers of the country this year.
