Ring of Honor champion Jay Briscoe, 38 years old, passed away in an automobile accident in Delaware on Tuesday.
ROH owner Tony Khan confirmed the news.
“Sadly, Jamin Pugh has passed away. Known to fans as Jay Briscoe, he was a star in ROH for over 20 years, from the first show until today,” said Khan.
“Jay and his brother Mark dominated ROH, reigning as champions to this day. We’ll do whatever we can to support his family.”
“Rest In Peace Jamin.”
Jay Briscoe, whose birth name was Jamin Pugh, became a member of ROH in 2002 and, together with his brother Mark Briscoe, won the World Tag Team Championship at that time. It was the thirteenth reign for the brothers as tag-team champions.
In addition to that, Briscoe held the titles of ROH Solo Champion twice as well as ROH Six-Man Tag-Team Champion.
“An incredible performer who created a deep connection with wrestling fans across the globe. My condolences to the family and friends of Jay Briscoe,” Paul Levesque , WWE chief content officer and popularly known by the world as Triple H, tweeted on Tuesday.
According to reports, he was one of the two persons who died in the collision.
Briscoe was named number seven on Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s list of the best 500 wrestlers of 2015, and he was inducted into the Ring of Honor Hall of Fame the previous year.
