The tragic death of Selena Quintanilla is known to many, including Christian Serratos, the 30-year-old actress who got to play her on-screen. Despite knowing the brutalities of her death, Serratos expressed how she faced a difficult time filming the scene of her death for an original Netflix series titled “Selena.”
Serratos jumped into the role of the deceased Tejano singer with ease until it was time to record the death scene. In conversation with Variety, she spoke about the grave magnitude of the scene. Even though filming the details of the scene was harder than she thought, “it was the respectful thing to do.”
She further added how the story of Selena Quintanilla should not be viewed as a tragedy; it should be seen as the journey of a strong, beautiful woman- a true icon who left the world too soon. Moreover, Serratos stated how viewers would be “hit with emotion,” knowing what comes next.
The actress expressed her profound appreciation for the late Selena Quintanilla, calling herself one of the late singer’s biggest fans. To embrace the role of a character so potent and free, all the while being well aware of the future was something that “hit me like a ton of bricks,” voiced Serratos. Quintanilla was shot dead at the age of 23 by the President of her own fan club, Yolanda Saldivar.
The Netflix series is a tribute to the late Tejano singer. It not only captures the early days of her career from performing at small gigs to becoming one of the most well-known artists but also shows how her family dynamic manifested itself into the person she became.
Seidy Lopez, the actress who plays the mother of Selena Quintanilla had previously told reporters about how this show was a golden opportunity for them to give an inside perspective to her history, and other events that shaped the course of her life. Her views were mirrored by Noemi Gonzalez, who plays the role of Selena’s sister. Gonzalez had stated how she hopes this show would be a much-needed tribute to the late singer.
In addition, Lopez also stated what they would talk to Selena about if she were alive today. If the latter was true, the entire team of the show would ensure that she knows how they value her as not only a singer but also as a person and this series is the perfect embodiment of only that.
