OROVILLE, California – At least one person died and four wounded after a suspect belonging to Sacramento opened fire inside a Greyhound bus and got arrested naked nearby a Walmart store.
“1 killed, 4 others injured in shooting on Greyhound bus in Northern California, authorities say”, ABC Eyewitness News.
On Wednesday night, when enroute to Los Angeles, the bus stopped at a store residing in Oroville, before Asaahdi Coleman began shooting the travelers randomly, revealed Kory Honea, Butte County Sheriff, on Thursday.
“Asaahdi Elijah Coleman showed what could best be described as paranoid behavior” the Sheriff added.
“There was some indication that he thought one of the other passengers was an undercover law enforcement officer,” Honea said.
As per the reports received regarding the suspect, he had been detained from Alameda County, California, for a probation violation.
The shooting killed a 43-year-old woman and injured a pregnant woman, 11-year-old, 38, and 32-year-old men. The victims were immediately driven to the nearby hospital for treatment. The victims’ identities have yet to be released.
Due to previous charges, the suspect was not legally allowed to possess a firearm. However, officials found six casings of 9 mm bullets on the bus, and a bullet hole in the bus’s windshield revealed the authorities.
“Last night was an extraordinary event in our small town, the barbell a mass shooting something that we have not had in this community,” said Butte County District Attorney, Mike Ramsey.
“Coleman had a juvenile record and an active felony warrant for having a gun as a prohibited person”, said Ramsey. The officials are set to file charges against the suspect in court on Friday.
“This particular individual in no way shape or form should have been in possession of a firearm. And as Mr. Ramsay noted, there is a previous history of this individual who is merely 21 engaged in this kind of conduct,” Honea said.
Coleman will appear in court for formal charges on Friday. It’s still unclear if he has an attorney to represent his case in court on his behalf.
According to the passengers’ statement, Coleman got on the bus near Redding, California, and “took a rear seat”, Kory Honea told the news outlets.
When the bus stopped in Chico, the suspect started talking to someone on the phone, communicating with the passengers, and was “acting paranoid and agitated,” inquiring about the city’s dangers.
“Man who killed one, injured four in Greyhound bus shooting was agitated and paranoid, authorities say”, Los Angeles Times Tweeted.
“That conversation then prompted Mr. Coleman to show some of the people on the bus a firearm that he had in a small bag, or satchel he was carrying,” said Honea. Later he opened fire inside the bus and ran towards a school near a shopping area. He dropped his gun at a nearby construction area that he allegedly used to kill the passenger.
