CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte-Mecklenburg cop has died in a car crash on early Wednesday involving a semi-trailer truck on Interstate-85 Southbound in northeast Charlotte, confirmed officials to FOX Charlotte.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin,” said Chief Jennings. “Officer Goodwin proudly served the University City Division. I ask for your thoughts and prayers for the family of Officer Goodwin and the CMPD family. Rest easy, hero, we have watch from here.”
Southbound lanes near Exit 45 will remain close due to the dreadful incident caused at midnight Tuesday, said NCDOT.
To excess I-485 Inner Loop, drivers must take the Exit 48 route. They can check the Inner Loop for US-29 South. “Turn right at the top of the ramp to follow US-29 South to the I-85 Connector. Turn right onto the I-85 Connectors and follow it to re-access the interstate near Exit 42” said the officials.
The drivers near that area can expect heavy traffic.
The road accident that killed the CMPD police officer happened around 3:40 am near Exit 45 in the southbound lanes at W.T. Harris Boulevard.
Before 8:30 a.m in the morning, Chief Jennings wrote, “It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of @CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin. Officer Goodwin proudly served the University City Division. The CMPD officer who died in the incident used to serve the University City Division. Jennings asked for “the community’s thoughts and prayers” for the deceased.
“Rest easy hero, we have watch from here,” he said.
The jackknife collision with a tractor-trailer caused the southbound lanes to close all morning.
Officials have not reported any other casualties, however, Channel 9 team saw an influx of ambulances and police cars in the region. Charlotte Fire Department as well as State troopers were there at the location. “We just saw this truck get towed away from the area. Many CMPD officers on scene told me they’re not sure what happened, but they were told to respond ‘immediately’” wroteAnthony Kustura.
