The Chicago Police Department is investigating two distinct fatalities that happened in the same apartment building with a gap of one day. The first fatality was that of a UIC student who had been scheduled to graduate the following week.

Officers discovered the corpse of 23-years-old Brittany Kinlow on Monday inside an apartment building in the Belle Shore neighborhood of Chicago, according to FOX 32 Chicago. She was found with a gunshot to the head and was declared dead at the scene, according to officials.

Following an investigation, the Cook County medical examiner’s office determined that the death was the result of a murder.

A day later, the corpse of Jovan Cabrera, 26, was discovered inside an 8th-floor apartment as detectives were serving a search warrant in the same building. The exact reason for his death has not been disclosed.

Authorities said on Wednesday that they were treating each fatality as a separate event and were conducting an investigation into each one. According to a police spokesperson, it has not yet been determined whether Kinlow and Cabrera were acquainted with one another.

Kinlow was supposed to get her bachelor’s degree from the institution on May 9, according to Danielle Kinlow-Cephas, her aunt, who shared the news on Facebook.“Please keep our family in your thoughts prayers as we try to make sense of this senseless act of violence. Our hearts are torn to pieces,” the post said
