The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention’s advisory committee for a covid-19 vaccine called out for an emergency meeting to be held in the coming week after reports of heart inflammation in young males were recorded. These young males complained of heart inflammation after receiving the second dose of Modena and Pfizer vaccines.

A meeting scheduled for 18th June is set to address this very rare condition attributed to the vaccines which have not been reported in the past.

The CDC received as many as 275 reports of heart inflammation. The condition of heart inflammation is also known as pericarditis and myocarditis. The individuals suffering from these conditions are said to be in the age bracket of 16 to 24 years.

According to Dr. Tom Shimabukuro of CDC; these are just initial reports and they do not determine if the person has pericarditis or myocarditis. Also, it is still too early to determine that the person in question got this condition after the vaccine shot.

Myocarditis is a heart condition that involves inflammation of the muscles of the heart. This can have symptoms such as fatigue and fever along with shortness of breath and chest pain. The treatment of mild conditions is through anti-inflammatory drugs but in severe cases, intravenous medication is administered.

Shimabukuro further stated that this condition Is more common in young males and it is recoverable.

According to the data received, a vast majority who complained about heat inflammation have been fully recovered whereas 41 individuals have recurring symptoms and 15 young males are still hospitalized whereas 3 are being treated in the intensive care unit.

More than 12 million people in the age group of young people have been vaccinated completely, this is the first time such a condition has been reported.

Dr. Tom stated that CDC is working on more data to analyze the possibility of and risk of having heart inflammation after catching coronavirus. The team is investigating the available data ahead of the emergency meeting where all the advisers will meet and discuss in great detail.

Dr. Marion Gruber, the director of the FDA’s vaccine office stated that it is important to recognize risk-benefit considerations associated with the emergency usage of authorization for the covid-19 vaccines. The vaccines will impose different side effects in different age groups. It is important to account for the information and compare it with different age groups of adults as well as younger ones along with the elderly people groups.
