An American Airlines flight was ground for a ruckus when an “unruly passenger” tried to break into the cockpit and open the plane doors mid-flight, on Sunday. A flight attendant from the plane’s crew had to stop the passenger by using a coffee pot, witnesses claim. The plane had to be diverted to Kansas City International Airport in Missouri after the incident took place.

CNN reports the airlines stating, “American Airlines flight 1775 with service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Washington, D.C. (DCA) diverted to Kansas City (MCI) due to an unruly passenger,” the incident will be under investigation by the FBI.

The American Airlines statement added, “The flight landed safely at MCI at 2:28 p.m. local time, and law enforcement was requested to meet the flight on arrival. We’re grateful to our crew members, who are consistently dedicated to the safety and care of our customers and who handled the circumstances with the utmost skill and professionalism.”

The FBI confirmed the suspect has been taken into custody for questioning. The 50-years-old man who tried to disrupt the flight and endanger people onboard has been charged with one count of assaulting and intimidating a flight attendant while interfering with a flight attendant’s duties. The plane took off from Los Angeles and was supposed to land in Washington DC.

Passengers on the American Airlines plane that was diverted, Karen Alston and Mouaz Moustafa confirmed the incident as eyewitnesses. According to statements from them, one of the flight attendants asked another crew member to turn on the lights, and the plane started descending soon after. Several passengers also reportedly helped the flight crew in restraining the “unruly passenger.”

The interfering suspect in the incident allegedly told flight attendants, “people were attempting to hurt him and they followed him on the plane,” adding that, “he heard the individuals harming his family over the telephone.” The affidavit from the incident includes details from the encounter, also mentioning the suspect told flight attendants one of the people who wanted to hurt him had a knife, another was sitting beside him on the plane. “(The man) then grabbed a small champagne bottle by the neck of the bottle and attempted to break the bottle on the counter. He began kicking and shoving the service cart into one of the flight attendants,” after the man started attempting to open the plane door, “A flight attendant grabbed a coffee pot and hit (the man) twice in the head with it.”
