The first-ever Daytime virtual Emmys took place in June earlier this year. Multiple award winners spoke up against racial discrimination in the light of the Black lives Matter movement happening across the country.
‘The Young and the Restless’ won the award for the best drama as well as took three trophies for acting. The co-creator of the show, now deceased, also won four awards in technical. The lead actor of the show, Jason Thompson, also won his first-ever Emmy for his role as ‘Billy Abbott’. He had been nominated previously for his role on ‘General Hospital’ but was not able to win it.
The show also won trophies in the supporting actor and guest performer categories. James, the winner of the supporting actor award, also spoke about BLM. He expressed that everyone needs to empathize and take action against racial injustice.
Ellen DeGeneres also took home the award for the best entertainment talk show. She was one of the celebrities who spoke up against racism, stating that she will be using her show to give a platform to the Black people and that it’s her responsibility to educate her audience.
The game show ‘Jeopardy!’ took home the trophy for the best game show along with the host, who won in the best game show host category.
Alex Trebek, the host of the show, expressed his surprise as he had been nominated 32 times but could only win 7 times. Trebek has been hosting the show for 36 years now while also struggling with pancreatic cancer.
The supporting actress award went to Tamara Braun from ‘General Hospital’. The show’s team also won a trophy for the wonderful direction.
Heather Tom, the star of the show ‘The Bold and Beautiful’ took home the trophy for the lead dramatic actress. The show also won the best writing honors.
Kelly Clarkson, who started her talk show last year, also won an award for the show’s first season in the best entertainment talk show host category. The singer also tweeted saying she will be coming for the ‘EGOT’ status which refers to celebrities who have won Emmys, Grammys, Oscars as well as the Tonys award.
The informative talk show honors went to ABC’s ‘The View’ and the best talk show award went to NBC’s ‘Today’.
The Emmys were broadcasted on television for the first time since 2011, with the women from ‘The Talk’ hosting the award show.
