A beach on Puerto Morelos, 15 miles south of Cancun in Mexico, was the subject of a recent deadly incident due to the Country’s intense rise in drug violence. Authorities report alleged drug gangs were involved in a confrontation that led to the shooting, killing 2.
Quintana Roo state prosecutor’s office wrote in a tweet, ”There was a confrontation between members of hostile groups of drug dealers on a beach in Bahía Petempich, Puerto Morelos. Two of them lost their lives at the scene, no other serious injuries have been reported.”
Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun is the resort where the incident took place, leaving many guests and neighbors in fear. Witnesses tell CNN they heard multiple gunshots while in the pool area before the hotel staff took them to a secure and hidden place.
CNN reports the guest’s statement as, “I was by the pool when multiple successive gunshots occurred. It went on for a little while and everyone dove for cover,” adding, ”We manned the entrances to the basement and were given metal sticks, even a pedestal bathroom sink, to defend ourselves.”
Other armed suspects that were present at the crime scene while the shooting took place, fled on a stolen motorboat, according to authorities.
The Hyatt hotel company also released a statement regarding the shooting and investigation at their Cancun resort, “The safety and wellbeing of guests and colleagues is always a top priority. We are aware of a developing situation at Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun. We understand the hotel team immediately engaged local authorities who are on the scene investigating the situation.”
The U.S. Department of State is also involved with the incident investigators in Cancun saying, “they’re working closely with local authorities to determine if any U.S. citizens were affected.” This comes only a couple of weeks after the last drug-involved shooting in Tulum, Mexico, where two women Anjali Ryot(American) and Jennifer Henzold(German), were killed. Drug-involved crime and violence have been on the rise in Mexico, with many common and other publicly prominent people losing their lives.
